Stress Management Q & A

What is stress?

Stress is a normal reaction to an unexpected event and a normal part of your everyday life. When you experience stress, your body has an emotional, mental, and physical response. Your body, environment, and thoughts can all serve as sources of stress, and the stress can be positive or negative.

When you experience stress, your body’s autonomic system kicks in to send out various hormones that make you more alert and responsive, so you can handle the stress. However, when you experience stress on a chronic basis, it can over tax your autonomic system and take a physical and emotional toll on your body.

When is stress bad?

Stress is bad when it starts to affect your physical and mental health. Signs that you’re experiencing chronic stress include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Weight changes
  • Alterations in appetite
  • Chest pain
  • Stomach upset
  • Irritability
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Headaches

Stress is also bad when you use substances or behaviors to help you manage your stress, such as alcohol or food, which may further compound the effects of stress on your body.
